Sad smoking ban defeated
Letter to the editor,
Ontario’s Health and Service Review Board has put the kibosh on Dr. Sarsfields efforts to put in a smoking ban in the northwest region of Ontario. His opponents, a group of profit minded businesses, called the Freedom of choice Coalition having won, can now continue to have the right to make both their employees and customers alike work or patronize their establishments and breath the cancer causing second hand smoke. Smoke that is a major cause of heart disease, emphysema and many other smoke related diseases. Yes how dare a public minded Doctor who was not even elected to any sort of Government office tell these business owners that their employees’ health was more important than profits?
On a recent business trip to Kenora we decided to have lunch before we headed back to Winnipeg, but in almost all eating places we encountered a haze of foul smelling blue smoke. Thank heaven for the non-smoking Mcdonalds fast food establishment where we found a haven of clean air.
The Ontario Government has said that at some future it may impose a smoking ban in public places. I put it to the Ontario Government to take a look at the success of the Non-smoking ban in the cities of Manitoba, and thanks to the forward looking Government of Manitoba headed by a Premier that has the well being of the people of Manitoba as a priority, a total smoking ban in all rural public places will be in effect this Fall.
To the Freedom of choice coalition I can only say after winning a so called victory that will endanger the health of your employees and customers alike I can only say you may not enjoy your profits as much when you realize the long term effects of the cancer causing atmosphere that you fought so hard to keep to maintain your level of profitability.
