Learning through the Arts (LTA) is what Riverview Elementary Students did last week when singer and song writer Rodney Brown paid them a visit.
The LTA program is funded by the Royal Conservatory of Music and local school boards internationally. Brown heard about the program and decided to apply to participate in it. “It is teaching social studies through musical activities,” said Brown.
As part of the program he visits a participating school three times throughout the year. Last week he visited Jill Wilhite’s class as a traveling troubadour. They were having a medieval festival. Afterwards he held a concert for the entire student body singing songs that were fun for all ages.
Brown whose parents hailed from Emo, now lives in Thunder Bay. He started performing for children in the late 1970s and has toured Northern Ontario many times. He has produced two albums for children and four for adults.
Through LTA he will be teaching at Sturgeon Creek School in Barwick, Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program in Stratton, Our Lady of the Way School in Stratton, McCrosson-Tovell School in Bergland and Riverview School in Rainy River.
