Electronic books arrive at RR Library

By Michael Dawber
Librarian

E-books have arrived at the Rainy River Public Library!
What’s an e-book? It has exactly the same content as a printed book, but you can download it to a compatible computer or device.
This means you can take the e-book with you anywhere!
This is very handy for road trips or vacations, when packing a stack of large hardcover books might be a problem.
You can also zoom in on the page, giving you whatever print size you need. If you normally use large-print books, this is a great e-book feature.
The library now subscribes to a collection of free, downloadable e-books. There are thousands of titles to choose from.
You can see them online at downloadcentre.library.on.ca.
Once you are there, get started by clicking the link marked Login. You will need to choose “Rainy River” from the list of participating libraries.
Then, type in your library card number as shown on your card.
If you find a book you want, and it is not checked out to someone else, you can sign it out.
To start, you will need to make sure the reader you have will work with our e-books.
Compatible readers include most personal computers, as well as the Nook, Kobo, Literati, NextBook, Pandigital, PocketBook Pro, and many Sony Readers.
A complete list is shown at the download centre.
Note the Kindle from Amazon does not work with our e-books.
Next, you will need to download a free program called Adobe Digital Editions from the download centre to use the e-book files.
Now, choose the books you want, and head to the checkout window.
You can keep your e-books for seven or 14 days before the file times out. You do not need to do anything to return the e-books.
Simply download your e-books, and enjoy!
You can have up to five e-books at a time.
If a title you want is checked out, you can put a hold into the download centre. You will get a message when the title is available for you.
And: did you know the Rainy River Public Library has two Kobo e-book readers available to borrow?
Just fill out our quick, one-page user form, and you can take home a Kobo for a three-week test drive.
