It was Hockey Weekend in Rainy River!
Eight men’s teams skated, shot and scored their way through the annual Rainy River Recreation Board’s first Men’s Hockey Tournament of the season.
Meeting in the A final was Warroard and Dryden. It was all Warroad until the middle of the second period with them notching four goals on the score board before Dryden got their first and only point of the game.
It was 2-0 after the first with Warroad scoring with 5:45 and 3:40 left in the period. They outshot Dryden 14-7.
After the second period Warroad led 5-1, scoring with 10:31, 8:12 and 2:53 left. Dryden broke their doughnut at 6:14. Warroad outshot them 13-8.
Warroad further secured victory with 9:33 left in the game to score the only goal of the third. They also outshot Dryden 14-8.
The Emo Stars faced off against the hometown favourites, The Buds. However, home ice was not an advantage for The Buds. Emo scored three goals in the last five minutes of the period to lead 3-0, two of which were short handed, and outshoot The Buds 11-5.
In the second period Emo added another point to their lead with 11:39 left. Then with 9:10 left RR appeared to be on a comeback. The scored then and again with 6:42 left to make it 4-2.
However in the third both goalies were tough, not letting any more in the nets. Emo won it and outshot The Buds 31-17.
Warroad received $1,100, Dryden $700 and Emo $400 in prize money.
