Trade show a success again this year

The sixth annual trade show saw its numbers down a bit from last year, but organizer Andrew Hartnell still feels it was a success.
Down from over 50 booths last year to 35 this past Saturday, Hartnell said that there was still a good mix of exhibitors. “They came from as far away as Winnipeg, Dryden and right across the Rainy River District.”
Over 400 people paid admission to get into the show, keeping the public stream steady all day. That is down from over 500 last year.
Some of the decline in public attendance, Hartnell attributed to the weather. “It was finally nice out and people did not want to pass up getting things done outside.”
As for the number of vendors he said there is no real science as to why they saw less this year. He made an effort to talk to those present and all the comments he received were positive with many reporting selling much of their products and making good contacts with customers. He did say that some of the regulars that were not there this year told him they have been cutting back the number of shows they do and that they plan to come to Rainy River every other year. “We were full last year, perhaps we will be again next year!”
The Chamber of Commerce, who oversees the event, did move the show a few weeks later this year in an effort to capitalize on a warmer arena. With the cold spring the area has had, Hartnell said, “It was a good thing because just two weeks ago there was ice forming naturally on the floor there.” It was dry and there was a heater running on Saturday, making it comfortable to browse the many booths.
Winning the door prize offered by the Chamber; a pair of three day passes to Kickin Up Country music festival in Karlstad, MN next month; was Milton and Margaret Kreger of Harris Hill!
Something new to the show this year was a sound system anchored at the Chamber’s booth. “That worked really well! We were able to announce winners from the various booths and help get their names out there,” said Hartnell on Monday.
Of the vendors Spruce Creek Golf Course won the draw for a free membership in the Chamber of Commerce!
Hartnell said the committee will be evaluating what worked and what didn’t and adjusting for next year.
