The second annual Rainy River Relay for Life is set to run this Friday.
As of Monday there were a dozen teams signed up with room for more! Organizers are hoping for 12 teams this year, which is down from the 20 they had last year. However, they changed the date for the event and there is also another Relay for Life the same day in Fort Frances.
The event runs from 4 p.m. Friday, until 7 a.m. Saturday. It begins with campsite set ups from 4-7 p.m. at the Riverview school yard.
A Cancer Survivor Dinner will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. at the RR Rec. Centre with the guest speaker being Kerry Vandendriessche.
At 7 p.m. the Relay for Life will begin and run through the night. Opening ceremonies will feature words from Canadian Cancer Society Rep. Margret Saville and guest speaker Jean Bernst.
At 7:30 p.m. a Cancer Survivor Victory lap will be held and that will be followed by a team parade at 8 p.m.
Throughout the night there will be several guest speakers, entertainment including belly dancers, Sara Gall, The Johnsons, team challenges, etc.
It promises to be fun for both participants and spectators. The public is encouraged to come out and participate.
Luminaries can be purchased in memory of family or friends lost to cancer. They are available at the post office and at various locations around town this week.
Last year over $57,000 was raised locally. They hope to raise $1,000 per team. If they get 12 teams they hope to raise $12,000.
The event wraps up with closing ceremonies at 6:30 a.m.
There is room for more teams. Anyone wanting to register a team can call Andrew Hartnell at 852-3701 or 276-0380 or Melissa Jenson at 852-4576 or 276-2918.
There will also be a Cuts for Cancer held Friday evening to add to the monies raised to fight Cancer. So far they have nine participants signed up.
