Library Corner: Summer reading program set to start
By Michael Dawber
Librarian
Summer is here, which means it’s almost time for kids’ summer reading at the Rainy River Public Library.
This year, our TD Summer Reading Program is called SPLASH! We’re doing stories about beaches, oceans, whales, and surfing.
We’re also going to read about our friendly neighbourhood pelicans.
Did you know Rainy River is one of the only places in Ontario where you can see pelicans?
We have two parts to our program this year, a reading contest and a reading club. Both start Friday, July 8, and run until Friday, August 19.
All kids up to age 12 can join our summer reading contest.
Kids will get a prize for every book they read, and an extra prize every time they make a book review.
A review can be a picture, an idea on paper or a post on our summer reading website. It’s at tdsrc.torontopubliclibrary.ca.
Children aged three and under can have books read to them by an adult.
The contest is free. Books must be checked out of the library overnight to count.
Along with the contest, we’re having a summer reading club for kids up to age seven.
Our club will have crafts and stories starting at 11 a.m. on July 8.
The club runs at 11 a.m. each Friday until August 19, when we’ll hand out the biggest prizes to our keenest contest readers!
The club is also free. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver during club time.
To join our TD Summer Reading Program, call the library at 852.3375 or email libraryrr@gmail.com. Every child will receive an activity book, stickers and a SPLASH! poster.
