There was little fight involved in getting some 44 kids to the first ever Rainy River Yu-Gi-Oh tournament last Saturday. They came from Warroad in the west and Fort Frances in the east.
Tournament organizer, Cory Lindal, had originally hoped for 16 kids, so when word came that 48 were interested in competing he was ecstatic to say the least.
The kids gathered, Yu-Gi-Oh cards in hand, at the Rainy River Recreation Centre to play the fantasy dueling game. After going over the rules, the first round of duels placed half the kids in one pool and the other in another.
In the end it was Paul Stintzi of Bergland facing off against Marty Johnston of Rainy River for the A event. Johnston said that he and his buddy Paul play often and for that reason he felt he needed to change his strategy for the big game. However, Stintzi stuck to his game and defeated Johnston to win a Nintendo Game Boy Advance and bragging rights. Johnston took second and won a portable CD player.
Winning the B event was Bryce Palm and coming in second was Robert Fish.
Lindal said that he plans to hold another tournament in a couple of weeks and with official recognition from Upper Deck Cards to host Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments, he expects future matches to be even more fun. “They (the kids) can register on line through me, see their tournament results and get rated against players from around the world,” said Lindal.
