Several team members are just a hop, skip and a jump away from going the state track meet after last week’s sub-section meet at Baudette.
The Lake of the Woods Bears track team, which features competitors from both Baudette and Rainy River schools, played host to seven other schools last Thursday. While collectively both the boys and girls teams finished 6th respectively they will send competitors to the sections this Saturday in Park Rapids. If they do well there they can advance to the state meet on June 6th.
For the boys Matt Neilson of Stratton, shone in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. He set a school record in the 1600 m. and won the event with a time of 4:58.96. This was a personal goal for him at the beginning of the year. He also came in third in the 3200 m. run with a time of 10:52.67. The top five in all events except relay qualify for sections. The top two in relay qualify.
Cooper Mickelson of Baudette also had a good meet coming in 2nd in the 400 m. dash and 4th in the 200 m. dash. His times were 53.13 and 25.07.
Mike Hull qualified for sections in the 300 m. hurdles with a time of 44.84.
The best showing for the girls team was the 4X200 m. relay team who finished second with a time of 1:54.76. Team members include Reina Hoscheid, Brittany Jasper, Carlie Waibel and Athena Pirkl.
Waibel also placed 5th in the 400 m. dash with a time of 1:07.15.
Pirkl finished 5th in the triple-jump with a distance of 9.79 m.
Hoscheid came in 3rd in the 100 m. dash with a time of 13.92 and 4th in the 300 m. hurdles with a time of 52.25.
Madie Heinrich came in 4th in the girls high-jump with a jump of .03 m.
Shantelle Davidson came in 4th in the 1600 m. run with a time of 5:48.35.
