The United Native Friendship Center (UNFC) its getting ready to travel the traditional route that was once the only highway in the area.
For the third year running the UNFC is coordinating a canoe-a-thon from Fort Frances to the town of Rainy River via the Rainy River itself.
The goal of the trip is both to raise money for youth programs at the center and to raise awareness about them. The Li’l Eagles program is designed for kids 6-12 and strives to build a bridge of understanding between native and non-native children within the area. There is also a youth drop-in center for youth 13 and up.
Healing and Wellness Coordinator R.J. Comeau of Fort Frances, said that the facility badly needs new furniture and funding for activities.
Last year they raise about $3,000 on the 107 km. journey. While they have traditionally asked for a dollar per km. Comeau said they welcome any size of donation.
This year he said they are already at double the number of canoes they had last year with 8 signed up so far.
The first day they travel from Fort Frances to Emo where they stay overnight. The next day from Emo to Barwick. From there it is Barwick to Pinewood and then finally to Rainy River.
It will take place from August 4-7th.
Comeau is encouraging anyone who wishes to sponsor or support the group to call him at 274-0561.
Half of the money raised will be given to the D.A.R.E. program as well.
