Last Tuesday 48 graduates were honoured at Rainy River High School’s 2003 commencement exercises.
In front of about 500 people, the class of 2003 received their coveted diplomas, were heralded by dignitaries and many were recipients of bursaries and scholarships.
Principal Bob McGreevy offered the grads an analogy that all could relate to. “In elementary school you were like a new car... now you are road worthy.”
McGreevy said that in the early years the new cars were told to go slow and discover things carefully. “You had a full warranty to protect you... that warranty was your parents and the watchful staff at school.”
As they reached high school they “Felt intimidated by the older cars around them with their exhaust smoking.” But as time passed the graduates of 2003 became the older cars. He noted that they faced many obstacles including 911, floods and provincial exams. But through it all they persevered and now are ready to choose a road in life to follow.
“Drive carefully, wear your seat belt and stick to the speed limit. Best of luck!” said McGreevy.
School Board trustee Ron McAlister added his accolades to the grads and encouraged them to keep working hard as they move forward.
His remarks were echoed by School Council President Mike Neilson and student council president Trevor Bonot.
Valedictorian Laurie Brown spoke of the good times they shared as classmates and wished them all good luck.
Emcee for the ceremonies John LaPlante said the following about the class of 2003, “You have shaped me and I have probably learned more from you than you know.”
