Hampton to call it quits after 24 years
Howard Hampton, MPP for Kenora-Rainy River announced Friday that he will not be a candidate in the Provincial election this fall.
“I have thought about this for some time, and I have finally made my decision”, Hampton said. “After 24 years as a member of the Ontario Legislature it is time for me to do some other things in life”.
Hampton was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in 1987. He served as Cabinet Minister in the NDP Government from 1990-1995, first as the Attorney General and then as the Minister of Natural Resources. From June 1996 to March 2009 he was Leader of the Ontario NDP.
“The 24 years I have spent representing the constituents of Kenora-Rainy River has been a privilege and I can’t thank the people of Northwestern Ontario enough for their continued support over the years”, said Hampton.
Hampton says that while he will not be a candidate in the election he will be very active in supporting the candidate chosen by Kenora-Rainy River New Democrats.
“Support for New Democrats has grown significantly and I believe that under the guidance and energy of our leader, Andrea Horwath, this positive growth in support will continue,” said Hampton
