Anne Mailloux
Knox United Church
One of the more unique activities at this years Centennial Celebrations will be the opportunity to visit and learn with antique appraiser, Dr. John Cooper.
You know that antique bracelet that old aunt Lucy gave to you or that old trunk that has always been in your family? Everyone has something old that they are curious about. Ever wondered what your antique is worth? Well, here’s your chance.
On July 29 & 30, Dr. J. Cooper will be visiting Knox United Church as part of the Centennial Celebration Festivities, to give you some idea of what that special antique is worth.
John’s knowledge of antiques started with a keen interest in the history of Canada and the occasion of Canada’s Centennial. These were the catalyst for first collecting antiques some 35 years ago.
John’s pillars for antiquing are “Study, read, handle and compare” and he has found that this serves him very well. He is now the owner/operator of Abbey Antiques & Art in Winnipeg. This retail store was opened in May of 1990. He deals primarily in fine quality antique & vintage silver, ceramics, glass and original art, as well as victorian & Georgian furniture. He has a passion for original paint prairie furniture.
Prior to opening his retail store he taught several courses on antiques identification and appreciation at the University of Winnipeg & University of Manitoba and the Winnipeg School Division. That, together with his constant exposure to antiques seen at museums, Antiques shows and at other retail stores has given him the necessary experience to successfully identify & appraise most antiques he encounters.
If you are curious about an antique of your own call Anne at 852-3691 to book an appointment. The appointments are in 5 minutes intervals and cost $5.00 for 5 minutes. John will appraise your item and give you some idea of its background. Appraisals will be going on all day Thursday and Friday so come down and watch and learn. It’s sure to be an interesting and informative couple of days.
