Centennial committee calls for volunteers
Jack Elliott
RR Centennial Committee
With Rainy River’s 2004 Centennial Year fast approaching the Committee responsible for organizing the year’s celebrations is finalizing a truly ‘once in a hundred years’ schedule of events. The past year has seen a lot of brainstorming and hard work by the Committee as a whole and now that specific events and goals have been identified, the tasks of bringing these individual events to fruition has been split up amongst members. These sub-committees of smaller working groups will have a free hand in pursuing their particular mandates with the responsibility of reporting back to the Committee of the whole on progress and challenges.
This is the time these smaller groups will be looking to the whole community for help. This doesn’t mean you will be snowed under by volunteering your time and effort. But it does mean, you can come forward and help with the events you are interested in and enjoy, without the dread of attending eternal formal meetings.
For example, the Logistics Committee headed by John Trenchard is in charge or ‘making things work’. This will include 24 hour security during the Centennial weekend at the Big Tent on the waterfront, and the public restrooms at the Rec Centre, park and Schools. A great little project for someone with those skills, to organize. How about it? Give John a call.
The Great Beaver Duct Tape & Cardboard Boat Races will require judges, water safety staff, starting/finish line referees and construction supervisors. How about it? A couple of hours of serious fun? Call Jack Elliott.
We’ll need an army of volunteers to direct out-of-towners to various events and facilities. Be a host and spend a few hours or a day in a yellow ‘VOLUNTEER’ T-Shirt.
You can pick up a list of Committees and their chairs from the Town Office or have one mailed out to you by calling 852-3244. Pick out a committee that you’d enjoy and volunteer. We are expecting up to 5000 people at the 100th Birthday Bash next year July 29 thru August 2nd . So do your part. Be the perfect host. Your mother and your town will be so proud of you!
