There is a new face at Rainy River High School.
However, Kendall Olsen the new Vice-principal at RRHS is not new to the area. He spent the last 11 years as V.P. at Sturgeon Creek Alternative Program (SCAP), in Stratton.
Olsen grew up in Emo and now resides in Devlin. He says his heart has always been in the district and he is glad to be able to work in the area.
I addition to being V.P. at RRHS he is a half-time teacher. He is offering instruction in Canadian Geography and Special Education.
He began his teaching career with a term at Lac La Croix which lead to about 1.5 years at Riverview School when he and another teacher swapped positions between the two schools.
He obtained his education at Providence College (3 yrs.) and Lakehead University (3 yrs.).
So far he is really enjoying his new job noting, “The facility is much larger here (than SCAP).” He said he felt it was time for a change but found it hard to leave SCAP. “They were like my family.”
He said that the move to RRHS seemed right and the opportunity to work with Principal Bob McGreevy was also a drawing card.
Olsen said that the new At Risk Coordinator for the board will be working with him closely as well. That he says fits right in with his personal philosophy on education, “Every kid that walks through the door deserves an education. If you can’t help those that are in need then you really haven’t done your job.”
The At Risk Coordinator will work at identifying students that are at risk of not being successful, whatever the risk might be.
Olsen’s long term goal is to become a full time principal. He has been busy over the summers taking the required courses to become a principal and feels that working with Principal McGreevy is, “A good growth opportunity.”
