Cancer Survivors invited to RR Relay for Life

Letter to the editor,
I am writing to extend a special invitation to all cancer survivors to attend the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. In honour of each person’s battle against cancer, we invite you to attend the Survivors’ Reception and Dinner, and then take that celebratory lap around the track with others who have also been diagnosed with cancer at some time in their lives.
Everyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer, whether years ago or very recently, is invited to be our guest at the dinner on Friday, June 22 at 5:30 p.m. We want to honour you at the Opening Ceremonies at 7:00 p.m. at the Riverview School track, which will be followed by the Survivors’ Victory Lap. We also invite you to stay for the beautiful and moving luminary ceremony. Candles placed in luminary bags are purchased prior to and at the event and lit in honour of friends and loved ones who have conquered or are battling cancer, and in memory of those who have lost their battle. The candles burn all night as team participants walk the course throughout the night.
We know that more people are surviving cancer and the chance for them to come together and be recognized at events such as these sends an important message to our community. Cancer survivors show through their strength and courage that we are making great progress against this disease. Those who have survived for many years are a testimony to the fact that the battle can be and is being won over and over again. Those that are more recently diagnosed have others to look up to and the drive and spirit to realize if others can survive, they can survive as well. It definitely softens the blow a cancer diagnosis brings.
We want as many survivors to attend as possible, and because we want to properly honour survivors and their caregivers, we need to register everyone prior to the event. Any cancer survivor who is reading this – please give us a call and let us know you are planning to attend the Relay for Life. I really feel passionately that the lives of other survivors make a difference to those who may be diagnosed at some point in the future. Please call me at 483-5412 or any other Relay Committee member.
See you at the Relay!
