Results of the antlerless deer validation tag draw are now available. More than 74,600 tags have been mailed to successful applicants across the province.
There were 83,335 tags available to 109,875 applicants this year. Sixty-eight per cent of hunters who applied received a tag. The number of antlerless deer validation tags in 2001 held steady or increased in most areas of the province. There was a reduction in tags in the Parry Sound-Muskoka region where last winter’s severe snow conditions increased deer mortality and reduced fawn survival.
White-tailed deer are abundant in many parts of Ontario. Plentiful food sources good habitat, and the ability to adapt to changing land use have allowed deer to flourish. By offering antlerless deer validation tags, wildlife managers are able to achieve local population objectives for the herd while maintaining optimal hunting opportunities.
