It’s time to kick some bass!
Ken Johnston
If all indicators are right there should be some monster fish caught at the 11th Annual Morson Bass Classic this weekend!
Event organizer Rob Gate said that the anglers are catching lots of bass and “plenty of big ones!”
Unlike last year when they were low, water levels are about normal but due to the cooler summer algae growth is down. That means the water is clearer than normal. Gate said the bass are just starting to move onto the reefs. “They are a little late this year, but they are there now.”
Pre-fishing in recent days has brought in many good reports of great bass fishing.
About 30 boats have registered for the tournament and Gate expects that number to climb close to 50 by week’s end. Last year they set a tournament record with 55 boats.
Friday evening anglers will attend a rules night and then hit the lake at 8 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-ins are 4 p.m. both days and are open to the public to attend.
This tournament is perhaps one of the most laid back of its kind in the area. Entry is only $300 per boat and organizers hope that everyone has a great time both on and off the water.
Boats launch and return from Buena Vista resort. Weigh-ins take place right at the resort. Last year’s champs, Dean Smith and Bart Stebnitsky of Kenora have registered for this year’s event as have several past champions.
There is a free pancake breakfast for the anglers just before they take to the water Saturday morning. The resort’s dining room will be open all weekend and the Morson’s Women’s Institute food concessions at the weigh-ins.
