Way off target

Dear Editor:
In newspaper reports last week, NDP MPP Gilles Bisson said the Liberal government has failed to deliver on a promise to provide more tags to Moose hunters.
He is off target.
This year, 392 more tags are being allocated to resident moose hunters than were issued in 2003, adding to the more than 16,000 Adult Moose Validation tags available for allocation to resident hunters.
In addition, Ministry of Natural Resources staff have been directed to review the Moose tag allocation process and explore options that will ensure residents of northern Ontario have better access to adult validation tags by the fall of 2005. Staff will also review the moose tag draw technology.
The good news for hunters and outfitters does not end there. The McGuinty government’s pledge to enhance and preserve Ontario’s hunting heritage as part of a sustainable wildlife management program is being fulfilled with a number of on-going initiatives.

Regulation changes are in place to allow for additional deer hunting in many parts of Ontario this fall.

The ministry is proposing to extend the fall bear hunts in parts of Northern Ontario and allow resident hunters a second bear seal in areas where there are no sustainability concerns.
In effect, the McGuinty government has delivered on a promise to preserve and improve hunting opportunities in the province and is committed to ensuring that residents of northern Ontario get every chance to participate and enjoy the economic benefits.
Meanwhile, the member for Timmins-James Bay is encouraged to improve his aim.
 Sincerely,
David Ramsay
Minister of Natural Resources
