Public invited to participate in Terry Fox walk Friday

Ken Johnston

On April 12, 1980, a young man named Terry Fox began a journey that would captivate the nation.
Fox, suffering from a bone cancer at a young age, lost his leg to it when he was 18.
Overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients while in hospital, Fox decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately he only made it half way when his cancer returned. On Sept. 1st, 1980 he had to stop his journey just east of Thunder Bay, Ont. Less than a year later, he was dead.
Since then Canadians have rallied every year to keep the valiant efforts of Fox front and center and also to raise money for cancer research.
This Friday both Riverview Elementary and Rainy River High School will be hosting a Terry Fox Walk from the school to the Border Gasthaus and back.
Organizer Georgina Jarvis said this is the fourth year for the event. Prior to that there was a Terry Fox run hosted locally.
Jarvis said that the principals of both schools have agreed to have their heads shaved if their student bodies meet certain fund raising goals. RRHS students have to collectively raise $750 and Riverview $300.
Jarvis said all the money raised will be turned over the Terry Fox Foundation. She also extended an invitation to any member of the public who would like to participate. “They can contribute whatever they like and take the walk with us.”
The event will begin between the two schools at 1:40 p.m.
