Coach’ Sariina Kalli’s Comments/Highlights
Our boys recorded another impressive team performance Sept. 30, getting two runners in the top ten and all seven runners under 25 to pull out a third place finish in East Grand Forks.
The order of our top seven shifted a bit this week, as sophomores Vincent Scott and Joe Cooper posted personal records (PRs) to put them in the top five for the Bears. This was especially helpful since we were running without junior Tyler Ketchum, who stayed back to recover from an illness.
I have to give credit to our two junior high boys this week, as well. We got to the meet late, so eighth graders Jaden Chorney and Taylor Poole jumped up to JV competition in EGF. They posted automatic PRs for 5000-meters, racing one mile longer than the junior high races they’ve been running. It was fun to watch them step it up and record respectable times, and encouraging to know they already want to run JV again.
Although no team score was filed for the girls’ varsity team, junior Shantelle Davidson and eighth grader Jessie Beugler led the team, finishing 11th and 14th. Freshman Lacy Holen posted a 23-second PR and sophomore Aimee Sugden was 6 seconds faster than last year’s best mark. The Bears were running without sophomores Madie Heinrich and Jennifer Blodgett.

Coach’s Comments/Highlights
Although we didn’t come close to Section 8A rival Warroad (3rd), the Lake of the Woods boys did place 7th of 30 full teams in Duluth, and finished well ahead of other section teams Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (22nd) and Deer River-Northland-Remer (27th).
I can’t remember a time when we’ve had enough boys to field a varsity squad at Swain, much less one that competes well enough to place in the top ten. Junior Tyler Ketchum showed his strength on the hills by leading the Bears with a 24th place finish and a time only 10 seconds slower than his flat-course PR. Freshman Andrew Friesen (30th) and sophomore Dylan Davis (32nd) pressed on to leave only a 16-second margin between our first and third runners. Junior Jay Neilson jumped in next in 64th place, while sophomore Joe Cooper (112th), senior Chris Heinrich (126th) and sophomore Vincent Scott (148th) rounded out the top seven.
Freshman Timo Brielmann ran his JV race 21 seconds faster than Scott’s varsity race, so the end of our top seven will switch around again for this week’s meet in Grand Rapids. Varsity and JV runners compete in the same race in Grand Rapids, so we’ll find out where we sit with our inter-squad competition.
Junior Shantelle Davidson paced the girls’ team at Swain, finishing 60th of 170 runners in the Class A Girls Varsity race. Eighth grader Jessie Buegler placed 88th and sophomore Madie Heinrich finished 94th in the same race.
The Bears travel to Grand Rapids Oct. 7 and to International Falls Oct. 14.
