4-H Beef Club news

By Morgan Haw
On Monday, April 30, 2012 a meeting was held at Nick and Cassidy Teeple's residence. First, the meeting was called to order, and we recited the pledge as a group. Next, everybody introduced themselves. This year the United Beef Club our leaders are Murray McDonald, and Ken Haw. Our elections started as we voted for club positions.
Kylie Nordin is the President, and below her is Jessica Haw as vice. Our Secretary is Morgan Haw, and Alanna Gerula took on the role as press reporter.
Next, the leaders handed out multiple sheets consisting of our lessons, and forms. We all filled out the project animals identification form, and as well as our participation agreement form.
The members who did not finish were required to bring them to the next meeting. While taking a look at the pages we discussed our steers breed and name. In addition to this, we reviewed the requirements for this year. And lastly we stated our homework for the next two weeks, which was to finish our animal identification forms, as well as the participation agreement, to find our heart girth of our animal, and to bring in $30.00 for our 4-H fee. Lastly, we need to bring an answer to the next meeting that explains how you could recognize a healthy cow. After this, the meeting was adjourned.
Monday, May 14, 2012 was when we met at Short's for our second meeting. To start the meeting Kylie called the meeting to order and led us in the pledge. The minutes from the last meeting were read and passed. We moved on to how to properly feed a steer as well as how to construct a "Feed and Growth Chart."
Following this we all shared our roll call, one what would make you feel better when we were sick. The members all read "Preventing and Treating Illness," and talked about curing illnesses with the use of needles and where to apply these needles. In relation to the last roll call, we talked about what we prefer not to do when we feel sick. When thinking about cattle we filled a table of diseases and medications for solutions. Once that was wrapped up our youth leader Jessica took us onto the porch to play a true and false game. Lastly, our homework was to find a medication box with a description of the meds on it. Finally, Kylie adjourned the meeting.
United Beefs third meeting took place at Alanna Gerula's. The meeting was opened as Kylie called the meeting to order, and we said the pledge. The minutes were read and passed by the members. Following that we went around the table sharing our medications. During this procedure we were asked to bring in a medication book for treatment of cattle, and what type of medication it was. After that was concluded our club read "The Healthy Cow" which taught us the right weight, and conditions for breeding. Next we read "The Healthy Bull" and learned when, and what condition a Bull should be in for breeding too.
While everyone wrote down one or two questions that would be answered by the vet, who would be making a visit to us the next week. And lastly, Jessica our youth leader provided us with the game Jeopardy, which was based on our reading sections. The meeting was adjourned as we looked at Alanna's steer.
