Kids raise over $2,600 for figure skating

Ken Johnston

29 kids skated figures that added up to more than $2,600 two Sunday’s ago.
The Rainy River Figure Skating Club (RRFSC) began its season with its annual skate-a-thon. It is the club’s biggest fund raiser of the year and helps keep the cost of joining the club down.

To date there are 37 kids registered with the RRFSC and this year the skating coach will be Randi (nee Carpenter) McCormick of Devlin. Randi grew up in Rainy River and skated her way up through the ranks in Rainy River. She coached the club in 2001-02.
The club skates every Thursday and Sunday evening and new members are still welcome.
There are three levels. They start with Beginner, then up to CanSkate and the CanFigureSkate level for senior skaters.
The skate-a-thon participants always compete to see who can raise the most money and this year there was two sets of sisters tied for first and second place.
Bree and Shanah Carpenter each raised $287 to win first place. Kendra and Shauna Moen came in second with $272 each. Jennifer Dyck came in third raising $200.
Anyone wanting more information about the club or wishing to register can call Mary O’Connor at 852-3685 or Mindy Pirkl at 634-3007.
