Being a watchdog for you

Ken Boshcoff, MP
Thunder Bay-Rainy River

They call us “government watchdogs” and it’s our job to examine the way the system operates. As a member of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimations I have the opportunity to help protect your tax dollars through investigations and new legislation.
You may already have heard about the new “whistleblower legislation” of Bill C-25. It’s designed to make sure that public servants will not be harassed or lose their jobs for speaking out when they see your -and their- tax dollars being misused. Public servants will be able to privately discuss their concerns with a neutral third party outside their organizations. This new legislation will affect all Federal public sector employees.
Denis Coderre, the President of the Privy Council, introduced the Public Servants Disclosure Protection Bill on Monday, November 8th. “The vast majority of public servants serve Canadians with honour, integrity and excellence,” he said. “And we have heard the concerns of Canadians. This bill is one of a number of measures that we are implementing to affirm that this government acts with integrity.”
The Whistleblower legislation is a step towards focusing on the solution instead of the problem. Our public servants shoulder a great responsibility to the tax-paying citizens of Canada. They should never have to decide between doing the right thing and keeping their jobs; it’s their job to do the right thing.
