Remembrance Day should be a holiday

Inky Mark

Dear Editor:
On November 17th I introduced a Private Member’s Bill in the House of Commons that would see November 11th become a national holiday.
All Canadians should be able to observe November 11th as a national day of remembrance.  Too often we take our freedom for granted.  It is respectful that each year we take one day to remember the men and women who fought and the many who gave their lives to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.
In recent weeks there has been considerable momentum from both the Conservative and Liberals to open a national debate on this issue.  Liberal M.P.’s have actively called for the introduction of such legislation.
At present, Remembrance Day is observed as a holiday in all the provinces and territories except Ontario and Quebec.
My Bill would amend the Holidays Act to make Remembrance Day a legal holiday and give it the same status as Canada Day.
If you would like to show your support for this legislation, please contact your local legion and let them know of your support, send a letter, postage free to your M.P. in Ottawa, or you can visit my website (www.inkymark.com
