The registrations have already arrived from Pakistan, South Africa, the two Koreas, and for the World Health Organization (WHO) Safe Communities Conference being held in the Rainy River District in May 2002.

With registrations in from over 14 countries, the WHO committee expects over 400 delegates to attend the conference. According to Doug Anderson, Chair of the 2002 WHO conference, over 40 people have asked to make presentations to the conference. Included in those presentations is David Skeet from the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta.

With so many people coming to this conference, the committee hopes on October 16 to find volunteers at their open house to assist in the myriad of jobs that need to be filled. Trish Mauro from the RRFDC noted that some of those jobs included greeting, chauffeuring, assisting at the venues.

Sign up sheets will be posted to begin organizing the volunteers.

Jeannette Cawston the coordinator for the WHO 2002 conference explained “One of the neat things about this conference is that many of the delegates hope to be billeted to gain a first hand experience of the way people live in a different country.” Several have asked to be billeted and the committee is now seeking persons who would agree to host those delegates in their homes.

In addition to the open house, the Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP) will refund $208,000 to 115 district businesses.

“I hope that people who are curious, people who want to make new friends from around the world, people who want to become involved in safety will join in our open house on October 16 at the WHO conference office on 414 Scott street Fort Frances.” said Anderson.
