Oh what a relief!
Ken Johnston
Relief efforts are in full swing in Rainy River for victims of the Tsunami that devastated South East Asia Dec. 26th.
In addition to the Mayor, Glen Armstrong, spearheading a countertop donation campaign at Rainy River businesses, the CIBC has been taking donations, as has the LCBO.
Mayor Armstrong said that many organizations and individuals have been very generous already. Last week the Catholic Women’s League (Rainy River) presented him with a cheque for $500 towards the campaign.
Rainy River High School Student Council jumped on the relief bandwagon immediately after their Christmas break. Student Council President Clinton Weafer said, “I was amazed how generous students were.” In about a week they raised $385.00 through a DVD player raffle. “We wanted to get it in before the government’s matching deadline,” he added.
Any money donated before last Tuesday the federal government matched dollar for dollar.
The town’s countertop campaign will run until the end of January and all money will be turned over to the Red Cross for Tsunami relief. Registration sheets are with the donation cans so that people wanting receipts for tax purposes can receive the receipts.
