CRIME STOPPERS SCAM ALERT!
Crime Stoppers has received information that an online “apartment rental” scam may be occurring within this region. The identified concerns are currently being raised in Kenora, however the manner used could be and likely is being duplicated elsewhere.
Ads are being posted on the online classified web site called Kijiji, and likely elsewhere online that an apartment is for rent for a specified rent amount of around $600.00 per month including utilities. The reasonable rent appears to make these ads attractive to potential renters.
Once an online query is submitted to these ads they are responded to by someone claiming to have left this region for employment in another country, and guides interested renters to drive by an address to observe it from the “exterior only.” Pictures of residence interiors and blank rental agreements have been provided to interested renters via email. The true owners have no knowledge of this and are not attempting to rent their property.
Payment demands to interested renters, through money transfers, is being made by those posing as landlords looking to rent their apartments online.
Crime Stoppers and police advise: “DO NOT FORWARD ANY MONEY TO ANYONE IN ANY MANNER PRIOR TO BEING SATISFIED OF THE LEGALITY AND LEGITAMICY OF ANY APARTMENT OR OTHER PROPERTY RENTAL OR PURCHASE AGREEMENT.”
