Library Corner: Free talking books available at the RR Library
By Michael Dawber
Librarian/CEO
Did you know free talking books are available at the Rainy River Public Library?
With generous help from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), the library has more than 200 talking book titles to loan.
The library also has three CNIB talking book players you can borrow.
There is no charge for this.
Under a new set of rules, you do not need to be legally blind to use the CNIB talking books.
You can sign up if you are unable to hold regular books because of a medical problem.
For example, if you have arthritis, and your arthritis makes it too difficult to hold up a printed book, you can use CNIB talking books.
You can also use the service if you have a problem reading printed words, such as dyslexia.
Along with the CNIB talking books, the library also has many other talking book titles available on CD.
New to our shelves this month are Severe Clear by Stuart Woods and The Litigators by John Grisham.
You can even access talking books from home through our on-line download service, called Overdrive.
Go to downloadcentre.library.on.ca with your library card number.
Once you sign in, you can pick from thousands of free audiobooks in the Overdrive collection.
These can be downloaded to your iPod, computer or other compatible device.
If you know someone who needs talking books, but – for medical reasons – cannot come to the library to pick them up, ask about our volunteer delivery service.
As we rely on volunteers to do our deliveries, please understand it may take a week to 10 days before someone is available.
There are no late fines for homebound customers.
When you’re ready for a new delivery, just give us a call at 807.852.3375 or email libraryrr@gmail.com.
