Owls sweep Pelican Falls at home
Ken Johnston
It was a good day for Rainy River High School Sports teams last Tuesday. The junior and senior girls volleyball teams won as did the senior boys basketball team when Pelican Falls visited.
The juniors went the full five games. In the first game the RRHS Owls won 25-19. Then Pelican came back to win 11-25 and 10-25. The Owls then sparked back to life in the fourth game with aggressive hitting by Meaghan Jasper and great service by the entire team. They won 25-20 to force a game five.
It was a battle back and forth but the Owls came out on top winning 16-14 to the fans delight.
The senior girls won 3-1. It was 25-21, 16-25, 25-13 and 25-13.
The sr. boys basketball team won convincingly 59-34.
Then the teams took to the road on Wednesday (Atikokan) and Friday (Whitefish Bay). All the teams lost in Atikokan. However, RRHS athletic director Guy Arpin said the sr. boys had a really close game losing by only 9 pts.
In Whitefish the Sr. Girls volleyball team won 4 games, the juniors lost in 4, and the senior boys basketball team lost an exhibition game there. Arpin did not have scores for the games.
The teams are back on the road this week travelling to Ignace, Sioux Lookout and Pelican Falls.
Arpin said it has been a tough second season for the teams. At this point he does not anticipate any of them will make NORWOSSA playoffs.
