Trying to keep from missing the bus

Ken Boshcoff
M.P. Thunder Bay-Rainy River

For those of you in Rainy River who know me, you are aware that I like to experience first-hand the situations we are working to improve. For those whom I have not yet met personally, let’s just say it is much better for me to clearly understand what you’re talking about. So with all the talk of reducing by half the Grey Goose Bus Service along Highway 71 and Highway 11 from Rainy River to Thunder Bay, I went and bought a bus ticket to experience it for myself.
As pleasant, safe, comfortable and quick as the ride from Fort Frances to Thunder Bay was, we must be aware of what severe impacts such service cuts would mean. For the hospitals along the route, including those along Highway 17 between Thunder Bay and Kenora, there would be difficulties moving laboratory specimens and tests. For commuters to school, work and various services in the many towns of the Northwest, a tremendous inconvenience would result. Freight, mail, parcels...all would be affected negatively.
For those on fixed incomes or individuals who are either unable or choose not to drive, the Grey Goose is economical, friendly, relaxing and efficient. With short stops in Mine Centre and Atikokan the bus still arrived ahead of schedule. The driver was professional and the passengers gave me helpful anecdotes on how vital the service has been and continues to be for the residents of Rainy River.
I gained a greater appreciation for this silver bullet. Although it wasn’t full (it had 18 passengers), it was definitely necessary for my fellow riders (who claimed that I was the first politician they had seen on the bus)!
At the end of this month, a hearing will be held in Falcon Lake, Manitoba. I have been collecting letters, petitions, Municipal Council and Band Council resolutions - BUT the response from Municipal and First Nations Councils has been too slow. I do need your help.
If you would like to see the Grey Goose continue to provide twice daily service, please call or write to me before March 25th. You can make a difference. Help me put the pressure on and keep the Grey Goose serving the Northwest.
