Andrew Kaliska

Andrew Kaliska of Rainy River, Ontario formerly of Sutherland Township, Arbor Vitae, ON, passed away at La Verendrye Hospital C.C.U. Fort Frances, ON, on Saturday, March 26th, 2005.
Andrew was born November 7, 1921 in Bardejov, Slovakia to Susan and John Kaliska.
he emigrated to Crescent Mine, SK in early 1931 with his parents and siblings, in the spring of 1934 they moved to Sutherland Township, Arbor Vitae to farm, and where Andy completed his education.
In his late teens and early twenties, he worked in logging camps on Rainy Lake, Flanders and in the Glenorchy area.
In the early fifties he served in the Canadian Army with the Royal Canadian Engineers at Camp Shilo Manitoba.
On April 9, 1953 he married the former Annette Vautrin and together they had four children, Marlow, Carolyn, Charlene and Kevin.
During this time over the years, Andy worked as a heavy equipment operator on road construction in Northwestern Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia, in the early 40’s on the Alaskan Highway. He also worked on Manitoba Hydro Projects at Gilam and Leaf Rapids.
Andy loved nothing better than sitting down with a good cup of coffee and reminiscing about past history and experiences with his many friends. When in Sutherland Township, he often invited the snow plow and grader operators in on cold winter days to warm up with coffee, cookies and a good chat. Anyone else was invited in as well. His friends in the OPP often looked in on him and they were always welcomed.
Andy was predeceased by his parents Susan and John Kaliska, brother Lad and, sisters Margaret (Kuklish), Jaye (Paldio) and infant sister Mary, brothers -in-law John Kuklish, William Paldio, Gerald Bernie, George Peters and brother-in-law Keith McCarthy.
Andy is survived by his four children and 7 grandchildren, brother Joe (Lucille), three sisters Ella (Bernie), Irene Cooper and Grace (Peters) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 15, 2005 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Rainy River, ON with Pastor Mark Mast officiating.
Cremation has taken place with interment at a later date.
