SCAP students raise over $8,600 for famine relief

The 2005 SCAP 30 Hour Famine was a tremendous success.
It took place at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Rainy River and at the Rainy River High School.
The Famine began at noon on April 8 and ended at 6:00 p.m. the next day.
Set up by the SCAP Student Council, the majority of people there were SCAP students. A group from Morweena Christian High School (located in Manitoba), also attended the Famine and combined their earnings with SCAP’s. The goal was to raise $6,000 for World Vision but the 50 students and dozen adults that participated exceeded this amount by raising $8,647.64.
During the 30 hours that the participants were without food they played soccer, volleyball, indoor hockey, swimming and other fun games. They also had the privilege to enjoy two chapel sessions by Jon Head and his band from Manitoba.
In between sports and games were juice breaks where the students were permitted to quench their thirst. The two schools had a great deal of fun getting to know one another which helped take their minds off food. As the time grew closer to 6:00 p.m. stomachs were rumbling ready for a delicious meal of sub sandwiches and ice cream sundaes. After a count down, everyone joyfully stuffed their faces. Many new friends were made and everyone enjoyed themselves.
A big thank you goes to the chaperones and cooks who helped make the weekend possible and to everyone who gave money. Thank you also to the participants and the SCAP student council.
Those 30 hours weren’t even a taste of what starving children in Africa and other third world places go through. They can’t look forward to a meal at six o’clock, or play sports with their friends to pass time. So I encourage everyone out there to participate next time or sponsor someone who is participating.
