What better way to mark the end of winter than to enjoy a gooood spaghetti dinner and an evening of entertainment. That is how the good citizens of Morson and Bergland celebrated on Saturday, April 9th.
A talented bunch of young people put on a dinner theatre at the Bergland Hall. The play was called “If the Good Lord’s Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise” a two act comedy about a wonderful old character “Doc” Babcock and his friends. Andy Moen was excellent as “Doc” and kept the play moving right along as he “acted on the absurd and nonsensical”. When life got a bit rough, he would go fishing (even if the creek had no water). His friends, Jordan Hansen, Chelsea Miller, Kristin Moen, Danny Anderson, and Courtney Hansen caused a lot of chuckles with their much varied personalities. Catherine Whetzel gave a strong performance as “Doc’s” interfering daughter. She planned to put him into a senior’s home with the assistance of a lawyer friend (Emily Anderson) and the aid of a Psychologist’s (Hillary Hansen) damaging report. By the way, the Psychologist changed her mind after she grew to know “Doc” but........too late, the damage had been done. The old man’s friends rallied round trying to think of ways to save him from this fate. One friend,Maxine or “Max” (Chelsea Miller) had a few suggestions but they involved a chainsaw or...getting behind the driver’s wheel of a bus! We won’t tell you how it ended except to say that it was an altogether delightful show.
The idea to do a stage production began with the youth of Trinity Lutheran Church. They chose a play with the help of their mentor, Kathy Moen. The kids picked their characters, spread out into the community for more actors and helped each other with the parts. The production costs were sponsored by the Trinity Lutheran Church. In the fall of 2004, the serious rehearsals began under the directorship of Kathy Moen and Ron Grout. Kate Bartlett was the able prop manager and Vince Scott was a good sound effects man. The impressive set was constructed by Rocky Moen with the help of Ken Pentney, Lloyd Moen and Travis Moen.
The Bergland Friends Of Recreation provided the food for the spaghetti dinner. Patsy Moen organized the meal and several ladies of the Church and community helped with cooking and serving. The cheesecake desserts were delicious and many folks had seconds during intermission. The organizers planned for around 90 people and about 20 more than that came to enjoy dinner and a show.
The money that was raised will go toward youth events, crafts, maybe a short trip, maybe another stage production......well, that “will be a big maybe” stated director Kathy.
