RRHS Student & Trustee

The English Public Board Council Conference held April 1st and 2nd in Toronto was an educational and enjoyable experience. The conference, which was held at the Courtyard-Marriot Hotel, began Friday morning. RJ Kelford and Heather Maxwell, President Vice-President respectfully, welcomed about 30 representatives from English Public school boards from across the province.
A motivational speaker set the mood for the conference through a series of demonstrations and stories.
Next, trustees divided into regions where we discussed issues in our areas. Several northern boards shared concerns. For example, lack of class options is a concern. Also, many schools cannot afford full-class sets of text books and other necessities.
A guest speaker discussed the status of work-to-rule in Ontario. Alternatives were talked over. One idea was rotating strikes.
The position of Student Trustee was talked over amongst the participants of the conference, where clarifications were made and questions answered. One thing that has been brought to my attention is a Student Senate. I am in the process of receiving contact information on students who may be interested.
The next day, Adam Spence, a student at McGill University talked about how to stay involved at the university level. Next, the EPBC Constitution was amended. No major changes were made.
The funding formula was discussed. The consensus was that it was far from perfect and it was agreed to be more effective, boards should be looked at on a case to case basis.
Suzanne Muir spoke on the challenges created by diversity in the school boards. Regional representatives reported on the issues brought up on the previous day.
Closing remarks completed the meetings, but many of the trustees, myself included, went for a farewell dinner at an Italian restaurant.
The conference allowed me to learn much more about my role as a student trustee. I made new friends who will be of invaluable help in the future. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend the conference.
