Rainy opens fastball season with a win
Ken Johnston
The Rainy River Legion fastball team started their season off with a 5-0 victory over Red Gut Bay last Tuesday in Rainy River.
For the first two and a half innings it was a pitcher’s dual. It was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the wheels fell off Red Gut’s pitching. Dan Usiski, Jr., started things off with a walk. Nick Ashworth then hit a perfect bunt to advance Usiski to second and get himself to first.
Nick’s brother Matt then flew out to right field. Keeping it a family affair, their step-father, Don Gall stepped up to the plate next and hit a single. Nick was thrown out at second but Usiski moved over to third.
Jim Chorney then hit a double scoring both Usiski and Gall. Tony Armstrong was next at bat and hit a single to bring Chorney in.
Mitch Gouliquer then hit a double and score Chorney. Murray Armstrong then hit a single. Both Tony and Mitch scored to bring the tally up to 5 for Rainy.
Marty Armstrong flew out to end the inning with Rainy winning 5-0.
Those were to be the only runs in the game.
Rainy’s pitcher, Murray Armstrong, faced 24 batters in seven innings. He stranded three of them and struck out 11 of them.
Last night, Rainy defeated Sight and Sound 3-1 (See next week’s Record for details). No other scores from the league were available at press time.
Rainy’s next home game is next Tuesday against the Pinewood Bears. Game time is 7 p.m.
