Gearing up for our annual bake sale

Rebecca Wood
LoW W.I.

The Lake of the Woods (Bergland) Women’s Institute met at the home of Marjorie Meek on May 11th with seven members present. It is nice to have Marjorie back after her winter trip. It was also great to see Margaret recovering so well from her surgery. Our thoughts were with member Ellen on the tragic loss of her brother in law, Tom Ronning. Our condolences go out to Audrey and family.
The meeting began with members sharing information about their favorite garden item. We learned that the blue “Jackman” clematis seems to be more hardy for our area than some other varieties. Rhubarb is up, and Marjorie treated us with some delicious rhubarb cake.
The hall kitchen has been cleaned and inventoried. Bricks have been delivered to the cemetery, and work on the new planter will be starting soon.
Everyone was pleased with the colours chosen for the new quilt. Work on it will commence on May 14th at the school. Tickets for the museum quilt are available now. Concern about the condition of the existing museum building was raised, but it will take more than tickets and teas to make a real difference in the museum.
Our annual Bake Sale will be held under the canopy at McCrosson-Tovell
School in Bergland on Saturday, June 11th from 9 to noon.
Members will meet on Wednesday, May 18th to plan our program for 2005/06.
Lake of the Woods (Bergland) Women’s Institute also held its June meeting on the 8th.
Ruth Huntley hosted our final meeting of the season with a pot luck supper in Rainy River. Nine members were in attendance. It was nice to have Rose Hansen as our guest. We missed Gerda this year and wish her a speedy recovery.
Pennies for Friendship were collected for roll call.
Volunteer hours were calculated, with over 120 hours in the past month.
A motion was made to pay bills which included cream & sugar bowls for the hall, quilt materials, cemetery bricks and flowers. We will have to do some fund raising to replenish the account.
A donation will be made to the
Pumpkin festival which will be held on September17th.
Margaret and Marjorie have finished the quilt top and it is ready for quilting. It is a real beauty! The cemetery planter has been completed, and I was wrong...it’s not as much fun as Lego! Our gratitude to Mike, for the many hours of hard work that you have spent on this. The flowers have been planted in all five planters, and we have been fortunate to have had rain to water them.
The plaque for the McCrosson-Tovell School Good Citizenship Award will be presented at the Graduation ceremony on June 20th.
The bake sale will take place on the morning of June 11 at the school in
Bergland. We appreciate Tony and Mike who have volunteered to set up and take down tables. Karen and Becky will let them know about this.
We have received approval to use the school on Thursdays in the summer for sewing.
The sun was trying to peek under the clouds when we adjourned. Karen won the door prize, a deep purple African violet.
