RR Daze parade is a go

Ken Johnston

It could be the last Railroad Daze parade ever in Rainy River, but Parade Marshall Susan Douglas is determined to make it a good one!
With waning interest in the annual festival, which started 18 years ago, there has been a great deal of talk about shifting the event’s activities to Canada Day each year. There was even some people who thought the parade should be on Canada Day this year and none on Railroad Daze. However, others thought differently. One of those people is Susan Douglas who helped marshall the Canada Day parade this year.
Douglas is currently looking for floats, clowns and any other interested parties to join in the 18th annual Railroad Daze parade on July 23rd. In addition to celebrating Rainy River’s railroad heritage, Douglas noted that the parade will also be a special tribute to veterans. “This is Year of the Veteran and they will be leading our parade.” Following the parade the Rainy River Legion Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a Veterans’ Tea in the Legion Hall. “Everyone will be invited to the tea to honour our vets,” said Douglas.
She is asking that people call her at 852-1937 to register a float or a group for the parade.
Parade participants will then be asked to line up at Noon at the bottom of Main Street along River Ave. towards 6th Street. The parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at the old railway station.
Other Railroad Daze events include a variety show on the Friday, a baseball tournament and the 3rd Annual Duct Tape Boat Races. See next week’s paper for a complete schedule of events.
