The wheels are in motion for the 2nd Annual Bergland Family Fun Day to be held on August 14th in beautiful downtown Bergland. Last year’s Bergland Family Fun Day was a phenomenal success with the members of that community raising more than $4400.00 for cancer cure. Friends and neighbours enjoyed watching crazy people get their heads shaved and they listened to music by Leonard Larsen and Hwy 621 old time band, while others walked the walk around the block.
Lee Johnson, local fundraising star, is greasing up his new bike to do another grueling ride for Cancer Research.
This year he is riding all the way to Miami (that’s Miami, Manitoba) in memory of Sam Visser. He expects to make that return trip of 708kms. in 3 days. Local supporter, Shirley Larsen and friend will follow in the car to lend any assistance and pick up the pieces if Lee wipes out on the highway.
This year there will be a free children’s program of games and activities 1-3 p.m.; there will be the now - famous Bergland Chili Cookoff sponsored by the local Women’s Institute 6 p.m.; walkers will collect pledges to walk the “country block” 4 p.m.; and brave souls will collect pledges to get their heads shaved 2 p.m; all to support those people afflicted with cancer. Add to this, some great music by local musicians and a free community picnic of chili and hot dogs, and you have the makings of a great afternoon. Organizers are inviting all would be Chili Champs to make that special recipe and try for the coveted Bergland Chili Champ of 2005 award.
Bergland Family Fun Day is aimed at providing community members and families with an afternoon of fun, visiting, and entertainment while raising a bit of money for the Cancer Society at the same time.
Almost everyone is affected by cancer at some point in their life, either directly or through a family member or friend. The Canadian Cancer Society helps by offering: assistance with transportation to and from cancer-related care; support for people at treatment centers and lodges; emotional support from others who have had a similar cancer experience; reliable information about all cancers, treatment and community resources. The Society also leads the way in the fight against cancer by funding research on all types of cancer. About half the money raised in Ontario is used to fund cancer research.
