Morson to be home of new golf course

Ken Johnston

Up Spruce Creek with a golf club! That will soon become a common thing to say in the Morson area as work is now well underway to build a golf course there.
Ken and Lori Pentney of Minahico (just south of Morson) decided to move forward with the project when they retired from several other avenues that were keeping them busy.
Ken was a long time commercial fisherman and the couple ran a camp on Lake of the Woods. Done with both of those jobs Ken said, “We needed something to do and we thought this would be good for the area.”
The nine hole course is located about three miles east of Hwy. 621 on Hwy. 619 and is called The Spruce Creek Golf Course. Ken owned the land so that made creating this new attraction more affordable than not. “People need more to do than just fishing,” said Ken.
The construction started last year but did not go full force until this past spring. The driving range is completed and the grass is growing in at a good rate. Ken is optimistic that the range will be open to the public this fall, weather permitting.
A former cabin from Ken and Lori’s camp has been moved on site to act as the office for customers. Beyond it backhoes, dump trucks and dozers can be seen busily excavating the 140 acres into the course.
The course will be 3,423 yards from the blue tees, 3,235 from the white tees and 2,788 from the red tees.
Several manmade ponds will be on the course, both to add difficulty to it, and to be used to irrigate the greens and fairways.
Ken is optimistic that the course will be open in the spring of 2007, and maybe even the fall of 2006. As for whether food and drinks will be served on site, “We will have to see how things go.”
They do not plan to sell memberships at this point. Golfers will just pay green fees whenever they go out.
He noted that there is plenty of room to expand if the need warrants and judging from the feedback he has received that could very well be a possibility. “Everyone is quite thrilled we are doing this.”
