Coach Sariina Kalli’s Comments
What a difference two days make. The boys set six personal records (PRs) and the girls posted four PRs and one automatic PR (APR) at Thief River Falls Monday (Oct. 3); quite a turn-around from the generally less-than-stellar performances at Swain Oct. 1.
Girls
Junior Madie Heinrich took the lead and kept it until the last half mile, placing second and setting a PR she hasn’t broken in two years. It was Heinrich‚s highest-ever varsity finish and it set the tone for the rest of the girls‚ team. Three more girls earned PRs, including sophomore Carla Johnson by more than one minute and eighth grader Jennie Buegler by 40 seconds. Katie Laugtug, also an eighth grader, completed her first varsity race in a remarkable 19:26. She earned a spot on varsity her first time running the 4000-meter distance.
Lacy Holen, Chelsea Poolman, and Karlie Eaton were out with lower-leg issues. Rosie Boucha has missed two meets due to illness.
Boys
I’m finally starting to see a positive change of attitude on this varsity squad. Top-ten finishes and PRs by freshman Andrew Friesen (4th) and senior Tyler Ketchum (6th) took the boys to their closest team finish of the season. International Falls has beat us by 30 or 40 points the previous three times we’ve raced them. This time, only 9 points separated the two teams. Two more boys cut 12 to 18 seconds off their times, while three others were within range of their own PRs. To have four PRs in one race is incredible, and it‚s encouraging to see all seven finish under 20 minutes. Swain was a rude awakening for this team, and today they proved they want something more out of the season.
Freshman Taylor Poole had a phenomenal race in TRF, knocking 1 minute, 55 seconds off his previous best time, and moving closer to that elusive top seven. Seventh grader Ryan Cooper cut more than two minutes off his best junior high time, crossing in 16:33.
Brandon Knutson was out with a work-scheduling conflict.
