Frustrated and disillusioned

Dear Editor:
In response to your article, “Council holds meeting on downsizing.”
“Yes” I left that meeting frustrated and disillusioned. I mistakenly thought the meeting was to hear the concerns of the public. The public, as meager as it was, were not listened to, especially anyone who spoke against or questioned why you wanted to downsize. They were shouted down and definitely not listened to by some council members. It appears that your minds are made up, and this meeting was just to allow council to say “we had a public meeting”. Then you could feel that your consciences are clear - baloney!
There is an old saying “A working horse is worth his hay”. In this case I would suggest to council, that if you’re doing your job, your worth your hay, or is it pay?
If you’re working for us, the public, let us decide what size council should be. If you’re working for us “Emphasis on working” we want to pay you what you’re worth.
If every one on council is pulling their weight we have no problem paying you: Only you can answer that question!
I agree with Councillor Deb Ewald - Now is not the time to down size - now is the time for all of us to pull up our socks and get doing things that are important! “Like pulling together to get our economy rolling.”
If you must carry on with this issue, lets let the public decide. People don’t often get to vote on their own jobs.
A mailing to each household, a plebiscite or referendum would put the responsibility for this where it belongs, “On the people”.
For the record, after serving for 18 years as part of a council, I believe the correct number for Rainy River is 6 councilors and 1 mayor.
Than k you for this space.
Sincerely
Gord Armstrong
