How to prepare for that trip to the tropics

News Release
NWHU

Tropical winter vacations are becoming more popular with people wanting to get away from the snow and cold. It is important to be prepared for travel to foreign countries to ensure that your holiday is safe and enjoyable for everyone in the family.
At least eight weeks prior to departure consult a Travel Health Advisor for immunization, health precautions and sun safety information. Receiving a flu shot and immunizations for foreign travel, along with information on hazards lurking in the water, food a
d insects could minimize the effects of some illnesses.
Also remember, winter ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun in tropical destinations can be as damaging to the skin as UV rays in Canada during the summer months. Water and sand will also reflect UV rays, which will increase your chance of sun burned skin. Tanning bed use, before heading south on vacation, will not protect you from getting a sun burn. Artificial sources of UV rays can be as damaging to the skin as UV rays from the sun.
Joanne Peacock, Health Promoter with the Northwestern Health Unit, says “It’s very important for people traveling to foreign countries to protect their skin from the harmful, damaging UV rays from the sun and to receive appropriate immunizations and health information. Minimizing the risks for illness will make your vacation more memorable.”
