RRHS boys curl their way to the top

They are a stone’s throw away from the All Ontarios!
The Rainy River High School Boys Curling Team went undefeated at the NORWOSSA curling championships last week in Dryden.
The foursome is comprised of two brothers, both from Stratton and one from Morson and one from Pinewood. Matt McQuaker-skip, Mitch Seguin-third, Kyle Miller-second and Jared McQuaker-lead, took care of most of the competition with little trouble.
In their first game they defeated Red Lake 13-1. They then beat Dryden 8-3, Sioux Lookout 10-2, Beaver Brae (Kenora) 11-0 and then squeaked by Fort Frances 6-5.
Fort Frances had to beat RRHS to create a three team playoff. It all came down to Matt’s last rock of the game which he made count leaving RRHS with a 5-0 record.
Dryden finished a close second at 4-1.
Both teams will compete at the NWOSSA curling championships on Mar. 6-7 in Fort Frances. They will face two teams from Thunder Bay and two from the North Shore. If they win there they will be in the All Ontarios (OFSSAs) scheduled for Mar. 22nd in Ottawa.
The foursome joins the company of three other RRHS boys teams to win NORWOSSAs. The most recent was the Trevor Bonot rink in 2002. The same coach then, Bryan Bonot, is coaching this year’s team. RRHS also won NORWOSSA’s in 1976 and 1984.
The other RRHS team there, the girls, finished 0-5. There was no mixed team at RRHS this year.
