Science fair winners announced at Riverview

Ken Johnston

From tornados to generating electricity from a lemon, the kids at Riverview Elementary School in Rainy River recently dazzled the public at their annual Science Fair.
At just about every turn in the school there were young scientists displaying their science fair projects. In the gymnasium the older students were set up. Kaylee Jodoin, 12, had a symphony of sorts performing in her exhibit. It was called Singing Wine Glasses. She took different sizes of wine glasses and filled them with water and then demonstrated the different sounds each one would make when a wet finger was rubbed around the rim.
Cody Ossachuk,12, had a very true to life display on how Oriented Strand Board is made in Barwick at Ainsworth.
Brady Jenson, 13, tested the acidity of different kinds of water on snow, bottled water, well water, river water and treated water. He discovered that well water was the most acidic.
Justin Moen demonstrated how pulleys provided a mechanical advantage for moving things.
Rochelle Jensson, 13, tried to prove that using magnets in cars could help prevent accidents by repelling one another.
Victoria Lindal, 6, showed that electricity can be generated from a lemon by powering a calculator.
Katherine Singleton, grade 5, wanted to show whether flowers would absorb dye through its roots in dirt as they do through their stems in water.
Kayle Stamler, 10, showed how tornadoes are created.
Colton Marchuk, 10, had a project called The Milky Way. He used soap and food colouring in milk to demonstrate chemical reactions.
These were just a few of the projects. Winning the annual Science Fair were as follows:
