Senior Deanna Baron received the Hobey Baker Award, as the Lake of the Woods-Rainy River-Indus girls hockey team wrapped up its season Tuesday (Feb. 21) night with its annual awards banquet.
Baron was one of four players to receive special awards from coach Mike Mosher. He and Tim Lyon, co-coach, handled the presentations at the banquet, which was held at the curling rink in Rainy River.
The awards were made mostly to seniors. Seneca Brown, a ninth grader from Rainy River, was the only non-senior to receive one.
Awards handed out by Mosher were - - -
Deanna Baron - Hobey Baker Award
Samantha Lyon - Most Dedicated Player
Sannie Hasbargen - Hustle Award
Seneca Brown - Most Improved Player.
Lyon summarized the financial picture for the program, which is only partially financially supported by Lake of the Woods School. Mosher thanked the many people who supported the program including Lyon, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Rainy River Rec. Center and others. He said that NHL player Keith Ballard donated $1,000 to support girls hockey programs at Lake of the Woods, the 10-and-under and 14-and-under teams as well as the high school varsity.
Mosher also singled out the four seniors on the team — Baron, Hasbargen, Lyon and goaltender Nicole Hopkins of Indus.
Lake of the Woods went 7-18-1 this past season, losing to Crookston in the first round of Section 3-A playoff action.
