Donald Hackett Budreau, D.F.C., 90
It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Budreau announces his passing on Friday March 10, 2006 at the Rainy River Health Centre.
Donald was born on January 5, 1916 in Lake Of The Woods County to Laurence and Ethel Budreau. He was united in marriage to Doreen (Dode) Smith on December 24, 1941. He joined the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and served overseas. He was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross in 1945. After returning from England Donald and Dode settled in Rainy River and he became employed with the Canadian Customs for 24 years. Donald was very active in his community including being a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #54 and received both the Meritorious Service Medal and the Palm Leaf to Meritorious Service Medal and has acted as President, Past President and District Commander. He was a lifelong member of the Knox United Church serving on the church board and a member of the Masonic Lodge #461 as Past Master. He served on the LaVerendrye Hospital Board for 6 years and as Town Councillor and one term as Mayor for Rainy River. He was also a Scout Master.
He leaves behind his wife Dode; son Robert of International Falls, MN; granddaughter Danielle Marie of International Falls, MN; sister Laurene and husband Bud Hannam; nephews Kim (Maxine); Christopher (Melissa) Hannam, Roland (Genevieve), Forrest, Darryl (Freddine) Horn and Larry (Linda) Budreau and families.
Donald was predeceased by his parents Laurence and Ethel; sister Forest (Roland) Horn and brother Colin Budreau and cousins Leland (Mary) Budreau and Jack Budreau.
A memorial service was held on Friday March 17, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Knox United Church in Rainy River with Rev. Barbara Miller officiating.
Cremation has taken place in Thunder Bay, ON and interment will take place at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River, Ontario.
The honourary pallbearers were Gerry Marchuk, Herb Nelson, Manny Nordin, Everett Hanson, Buzz Miniely, Tom Irvine, Irwin Johnston, and Larry Armstrong.
An honour guard was provided by the Royal Canadian Legion Major Hughes Br. 54, accompanied by the Piper and the Masonic Lodge #461. We will miss him!
