The two previous champions from 2003 and 2004 met in the ‘A’ event finals at the Rainy River Curling Club Mixed Bonspiel Sunday.
Tim Nordin of Rainy River, who won it in 2003, and Craig Armstrong of Stratton, who won in 2004, were the top two undefeated teams at the 16 team bonspiel.
Nordin jumped to an early 2-0 lead scoring two in the first. But his lead was to be short lived when he missed a hit and rolled out. Armstrong then drew in for four.
In the third Nordin used the hammer to try a difficult angle raise but was inside of the broom and allowed Armstrong to steal two more leading 6-2.
In the fourth Nordin was heavy on a draw and went through the house, blowing a chance to get two. Instead he cut Armstrong’s lead to 6-3.
Armstrong added one more in each of the next two ends and Nordin resigned losing 8-3 after six ends. Armstrong’s rink included Andrea McNabb, Jason Wilson and Brenda Jodoin. Curling with Nordin was Jen Armstrong, Clint Armstrong and Carling Nordin.
In the ‘B’ event it was Susan Wolanicki vs. Dave Armstrong, both of Rainy River. It was back and forth the entire game. Wolanicki scored three in the first end but Armstrong answered with four in the second. He added one more in the third to lead 5-3. However, Wolanicki scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to take back the lead 6-5.
In the sixth Armstrong returned fire with two more to lead 7-6. Wolanicki then scored three to lead 9-7 coming home.
In the final end Armstrong came back with a four ender to win 11-9. Curling with Armstrong was Tammy Armstrong, Joe Bonhomme, Patti Bonhomme.
In the ‘C’ event Terry Lee of Stratton, made quick work of Guy Arpin of Rainy River. After two ends it was 9-0 and by the fourth it was 12-0. Arpin resigned after that. Curling with Lee was Sandy Shrumm, Danielle Shrumm and Dale Ossachuk.
