Last Tuesday 24 students at Riverview Elementary School in Rainy River DAREd to be different as they graduated from the DARE program.
DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and is an anti-drug and anti-violence educational program taught by local Ontario Provincial Police Officers.
Teaching the course at Riverview for the past 17 weeks was Constable Ken Jasper. He noted that the kids learned about drugs, alcohol, tobacco, peer pressure, dealing with stress, violence, the media and how it effects people.
Good attendance and good behaviour was also stressed and to complete the program the students had to write an essay on how they feel about DARE. Jasper said, “All the essays were very good and normally there are about three or four that are outstanding. This time there were eight which is really impressive.”
Winning the essay contest was Kaylee Jodoin, followed by Saragh Fraser in 2nd and Bryson Jasper and Madison Boisvert who tied for third.
Every DARE grad was congratulated by Jasper and both the principal, Kendall Olsen and Vice-principal Anne Caradice. They received a DARE t-shirt and a diploma for completing the program.
Const. Jasper concluded by saying, “Remember, it is easier to stay out of trouble than it is to get into it.”
