Doris Lucille Thorburn, 80
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Doris Lucille Thornburn on April 27, 2006 upon returning from a wonderful winter in B.C.
Doris was predeceased by her parents, Selma and John Quick and daughter Debra Jolene, brother-in-law Earl Keene, Paul Mokaluk; and partner Frank Murray.
Doris will remain in the hearts of her sister Louise Keene and family of Havelock, Ontario; Denver Thorburn; and children: Merle (June) - Yellowknife NWT, Tim (Paula) - Kenora; Kirby - Kenora, Wanda (Duane) - Kenora, Conley) Kenora; grandchildren: Kristi Gildberg, Kyle Thornburn, Maddi, Logan and Cody Harris, Trevor, Angelina and Bethany Throburn, Tamara Rego, and Amber Keita; and her many nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
Doris was born on May 26, 1926 in Rainy River, Ontario where she was raised with her sister Louise.
Upon graduation Doris travelled to Toronto where she completed her First Class Elementary School Teacher’s Certificate. Doris taught over a period of 19 years which included home teaching her children.
In addition, Doris and husband, Denver, managed the businesses of commercial fishing, mink farming, and maintaining navigational aids on The lake of the Woods. In the early 1970s Doris and family expanded their businesses to include a commercial fish buying business located on the Rat Portage Reserves near Kenora. In the 1990s Doris successfully managed Devil’s Gap and Bare Point Marinas through the summers and switched gears in fall to run remote drill camps through the N.W. area. Doris was actively sought after for her cooking skills.
In the1980s Doris realized and acted on another dream when she purchased Chapel Island and proceeded to build her very own dream log home complete with tea house. Living and running so many enterprises from her home on Doris Island, and later TeePee Island and Chapel Island, gave Doris opportunities to experience lake life to a level that few will ever experience. Over the last few years Doris’ interests drew her to British Columbia where she and partner, Frank, built a home together in the town of Oliver. It was in this area of the country where they found the atmosphere to their greatest passion, dancing. It was in their opinion, “The best”.
All that knew her will remember her generosity, determined spirit, selfless kindness and her devotion to her family.
As per Doris’ wishes, cremation has taken place.
A Funeral Service was held Thursday, May 4, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Knox United Church, 116 - 5th Avenue South, with a Celebration of Doris’ Life to follow at the Kenora Legion. There will be a tribute held at McInnes Creek Chapel, Rainy River, Ontario mid-summer. Further details will be posted in the Rainy River Record at a later date.
